New Systems Keep a Close Eye on Online Students at Home

In renewing the Higher Education Act congress is about to pass a bill that would require online students to get spy cameras.  In theory this is to crack down on cheating.  Essentially the school that offers online classes must prove that the person doing the work is the same person enrolled in the class.  Some colleges are already trying technologies that authenticate online test takers by reading their fingerprints, watching them via Web cameras, or recording their keystrokes.

Now here is the problem… Most of this technology is monitored by a third party.  The school is not looking at what the student is doing but rather the companies that created the systems are monitoring the students.  So what else are they monitoring?  EVERYTHING!  Most of these companies are monitoring the students via webcam, their typing style, fingerprints…

Now I remember being in college.  At some point it is not cheating but “utilizing your resources”.  Requiring students to get a camera and other equipment make online learning less convenient, as well as a little worry some as far as safety is concerned.  It’s not like students that go to traditional classrooms don’t cheat either.  They might be a little better at it since they have to take the test in front of the teacher.
