Palin's Speech and the Republican Convention
The last few weeks in politics have left me completely disenfranchised. Ever since the announcements of Joe Biden as the running mate to Obama I have actively tried to turn a deaf ear to the world of politics (needless to say I was a little disappointed by his decision). However, last week left me very confused when McCain announced Sara Palin as his Vice President. My first reaction was ”who???” Then after I did a little research on her the question became “why?!?” So I decided that this week I would pay a little closer attention to the republican convention than I did the Democratic convention. The way I see it I want to be informed and the one thing that no one can deny is that this is a historic election one way or another.
I listened to the very hollow speech given be Liberman Tuesday night. He seemed more concerned with the fact that he was a democrat at a republican convention than truly endorsing McCain. I remember listening to most of his speech waiting for him to get to the point. It was a complete waste of time. This evening I had the chance to catch both the Giuliani speech as well as Sarah Palin’s speech. Giuliani got the crowd going but in my opinion for the wrong reasons. I remember hearing the crowd chanting at one point “drill for oil” during his speech. There were jabs at Obama as well as Biden (but that is to be expected). I didn’t really care about that because the person I wanted to hear was Palin. For the last week we have heard about her teenage daughter, her child with Down Syndrome, and this situation with her brother in law. All that pushed aside, today was the day for her to shine. For almost a week the American public has been wondering who this woman was and why she was chosen as McCain’s Vice President pick. I wanted to hear what she had to say. I wanted to hear something that would make me think that she was the best candidate for the position, that she was not picked because she was a woman, but because she was a political firecracker that would put the media in its place and put a lot of people’s mind at ease about her history, political ideals… I was horribly disappointed. It seemed like a lot of her speech was just jabs at the Democratic Party, Obama, McCain ass kissing, and a few jokes to lighten the mood. I wanted more from her. I paid attention to what she had to say and I was left wanting. I wanted more from her and this convention.
I know that there is already a lot of political mud slinging between the two parties and I am not saying that the Democrats didn’t leave me a lot disappointed either. I think that I am just frustrated with all the Bull Sh*t and wish that we can get to the point in all of this.
