Artist to Check Out: Frausun
Frausun, a one-man musical operation that utilizes human bone instruments, Tibetan singing bowls, war drums and modern loops, is celebrating the release of the new music video for “Tournesol,” an S+M inspired song of love composed by a Master, dedicated to his Slave, in which she turns towards the sun like a flower for his strength and tenderness. In conjunction with the release of the video, Frausun will be performing at the Prophet Bar in the Big Room April 3rd at 9PM with copies of the new CD, 1000, for sale.
After acquiring an antique medical skeleton, Kurtz, the sole performer of Frausun, transformed the bones into a stringed instrument to bring a sound that he could not find anywhere else. Included with the bones, he uses Indian flutes, Tibetan singing bowls, hand bells, and digital effects.
“The body is the ultimate instrument. It has strings, drums, rhythm...everything needed to create the harmony of music.”
Inspired by such musical influences as Dead Can Dance, Death in June, and Peter Murphy, and a variety of literary sources such as Kate Chopin, Keats, and William S. Burroughs, Frausun represents the masculine expression of feminine energy, hence the name Frau (Woman) Sun (Male Strength).
“My mask is a symbol of transformation. After a personal tragedy last year, I decided to commit suicide wearing a cloak and Venetian Carnivale Mask.
Working through the pain, I ripped the cloak to shreds and dispersed the fabric among the instruments. I broke the mask and made it golden, a symbol of rebirth and the Sun."
Frausun’s songs cover a variety of subjects from Bondage, Tibetan Sky Burials and Goddess worship, to female empowerment and Alchemical love.
“‘Tournesol was directly inspired by my Slave who is seen in the video, covered in flowers and the words of our contract that bind us together stronger than any husband or wife.”
"'Thunder in your Veins,' a song about a wife who kills her husband after she is forced to wear a burka and is beaten, is a call for women everywhere to revolt. I know my work has succeeded when they cut the throats of their abusers and liberate themselves from nightmares."
With hidden messages in the music, the magick of harmony plays on the subconscious of the listener.
"The dots and dashes scattered among the imagery and sounds are Morse Code, revealing secret phrases, enhanced by Magick. In my song “Anthem for Raganorak,” the opening beat is spelled out as O-D-I-N in Morse Code, using bass, invoking his name before he battles to the death."
