AFIs Top 10

Now personally I like lists.  They keep me organized, they help me prioritize everything.  So I was excited when I saw that AFI released a list of the top 10 movies in 10 top 10 list.  Now I was really disappointed to see that horror was not one of the top 10 categories, I was also kind on bummed to see that there wasn’t a category for action or foreign films (I know it is the American Film Institute but they can still rate foreign films).  Now I know some of you film buffs out there are rolling your eyes now.  However, I was pleasantly surprised to see what movies made the list and a little disappointed to see what movies were left out.  So per AFI here are the top 10 movies in various categories…

Animation:

  1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  2. Pinocciaho
  3. Bambi
  4. The Lion King
  5. Fantasia
  6. Toy Story
  7. Beauty and the Beast
  8. Shrek
  9. Cinderella
  10. Finding Nemo

Now aside from my personal issues with some of these movies (I hate Bambi, Snow White, and the Lion King) the list is not that bad.  I do wonder where are the almost epic animations like Princess Monoki, Metropolis, and Spirited Away...?

Romantic Comedy:

  1. City Lights
  2. Annie Hall
  3. It Happened One Night
  4. Roman Holiday
  5. The Philidelphia Story
  6. When Harry Met Sally
  7. Adam’s Rib
  8. Moonstruck
  9. Harold and Maude
  10. Sleepless in Seattle

Now I like this list.  I grew up watching The Philidelphia Story,  and Roman Holiday.  If there are movies that you feel they failed to mention in this category please feel free to comment.  I have to admit this was not a genre of movies I grew up on.

Westerns:

  1. The Searchers
  2. High Noon
  3. Shane
  4. Unforgiven
  5. Red River
  6. The Wild Bunch
  7. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
  8. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
  9. Stagecoach
  10. Cat Ballou

I really had a problem with this category.  There are a lot of movies that I thought should have made the list The Man With No Name, Hang ‘Em High, Magnificent 7…  I am not the biggest western fan but I felt like important films in the genre were just left out.

Sports:

  1. Raging Bull
  2. Rocky
  3. The Pride of the Yankees
  4. Hoosiers
  5. Bull Durham
  6.  The Hustler
  7. Caddyshack
  8. Breaking Away
  9. National Velvet
  10. Jerry Maguire

I liked this list.  It had a good range of movies, and when I thought about it I couldn’t think of a movie they forgot.

Mystery:

  1. Vertigo
  2. Chinatown
  3. Rear Window
  4. Laura
  5. The Third Man
  6. The Maltese Falcon
  7. Blue Velvet
  8. Dial M for Murder
  9. The Usual Suspects

Now I thought I would be the most critical of this category, but I wasn’t.  I really liked this list.  I grew up watching the Maltese Falcon, Rear Window, and Dial M for Murder.  This list is great!

Fantasy

  1. The Wizard of Oz
  2. The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
  3. It’s a Wonderful Life
  4. King Kong
  5. Miracle of 34th Street
  6. Field of Dreams
  7. Harvey
  8. Groundhog Day
  9. The Thief of Bagdad
  10. Big

When I saw this list I actually smiled.  I remember seeing most of these movies and really liking them.  My favorite would have to be the Wizard of Oz.  My mom told me when I was a kid I made her watch that movie ever day (I later saw the Wiz and was traumatized.  I still haven’t watched that whole movie).

Sci-Fi

  1. 2001: A Space Odyessey
  2. Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope (for all of you who didn’t count the crap that came out within the last 10 years this was the really good Star Wars
  3. E.T.- Extra Terrestrial
  4. A Clockwork Orange
  5. The Day the Earth Stood Still
  6. Blade Runner
  7. Alien
  8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers
  10. Back to the Future

This list is flawless need I say more.  Ok well one thing, where is Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

Ganster

  1. The Godfather
  2. Goodfellas
  3. The Godfather Part II
  4. White Heat
  5. Bonnie and Clyde
  6. Scarface: The Shame of a Nation
  7. Pulp Fiction
  8. The Public Enemy
  9. Little Caesar
  10. Scarface

Now here is another list that I really liked.  Since the Usual Suspects made the list under mystery I really didn’t have anything to complain about.

Courtroom Drama:

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird
  2. 12 Angry Men
  3. Kramer vs Kramer
  4. The Verdict
  5. A Few Good Men
  6. Witness for the Prosecution
  7. Anatomy of a Murder
  8. In Cold Blood
  9. A Cry in the Dark
  10. Judgment at Nuremberg

I liked this list.  Especially since the two movies that I thought should be on the list were in the top 5.  There were some movies that I thought should have been on the list but then I also realized that they were in more than one category (like mystery and courtroom drama), and I couldn’t figure out which category they were more suited for.

Epic:

  1. Lawrence of Arabia
  2. Ben-Hur
  3. Schindler’s List
  4. Gone with the Wind
  5. Spartacus
  6. Titanic
  7. All Quiet on the Western Front
  8. Saving Private Ryan
  9. Reds
  10. The Ten Commandments

These are the long marathon movies, long and sometimes very boring.  Aside from this list I couldn’t really think about other movies that should have been here.

If you have a problem with anything on these lists I will be happy to discuss it and maybe we can come up with a list of our own.
