Declining Value of a Degree
While growing up my mom always taught me that if you go to college when you finish you will have a leg up and get a good job. It seemed like sound logic, and I figured I would better my chances and even get a MBA. However when I finished school I realized too things: 1) I didn’t really want to work for anybody and 2) Even if I wanted to work for someone I couldn’t find a job. I had spent so much time in school that I neglected the “work experience” portion (even though I worked while doing both my undergrad as well as graduate).
After reading this article in the Wall Street Journal I don’t feel that bad however. Bea Dewing spent 6 years looking for a job after she was laid off and ended up taking a position that paid less. Her story is not uncommon. It seems like you can’t work at McDonalds without a degree anymore, so the value of them have decreased and companies are not looking at real world experience. A degree doesn’t even guarantee a raised salary. So what is a person to do to get ahead???
